A brave and fearless police dog was punched repeatedly before being thrown into a river by a violent thug
Police Dog ‘Resi’ and her handler, PC David Lowry, were tracking a suspect who had decamped from a stolen BMW.
PD Resi managed to catch up with the thief easily and held the male (using its teeth) by the right arm as his handler followed shortly behind.
But during the struggle between PD Resi and the lout, the male punched the police dog several times in the head before throwing her into the River Aire in Bramley, Leeds.
Brave Resi managed to get out of the river without injury and continued to chase after the male who had various bite marks to his arm.
PD Resi and PC Lowry soon caught back up with the male, and thanks to their gritted determination, the menace to society were banged up for eight years.
Talking about his trusty partner, PC Lowry said that PD Resi “wasn’t even bothered in the slightest”.
“I could tell she was lucky and hadn’t been injured by the way she climbed out of the river.
“I had a think about what to do next. Because she had had that incident, I did question that if I sent her again, she might not do it, and I couldn’t blame her to be fair.
“If it were me, I wouldn’t.”
The duo was nominated for a police bravery award owing to their relentless pursuit of the offender, despite the levels of violence he dealt out during the incident.
PC Lowry added:
“He was punching her, but she wouldn’t come off, and then he has spun around and flung her, and she has just flown through the air and landed in the River Aire.
“At the time, I thought I saw her fly through the trees and then the helicopter radioed me and told me they thought he had thrown her in the river.
“I called her, and she came back out of the river to me.”
