A West Midlands Police motorcyclist has had a lucky escape after nearly being knocked off of his motorbike by a careless driver yesterday (18th June).

@TrafficWMP uploaded the 30-second video clip to Twitter following the close call that happened on a roundabout.

In the footage, two police motorcyclists can be seen to enter a roundabout in moderate traffic.

As they go to take their exit, a silver VW Polo cuts directly across them, narrowly missing the lead police motorcyclist.

It was only the quick reactions of the police officer that prevented an accident.

In the footage, the VW Polo continues driving, albeit slowly, as the police motorcyclist re-starts his bike, ready to catch up with the careless driver.

A spokesperson for WMP Traffic tweeted to say:

“Here’s a near miss from yesterday that’s a good reminder of the importance of lane discipline, signalling and looking for other road users.

“The driver was stopped and dealt with appropriately”.

You can support emergency services news from as little as £1. It only takes a minute. Every contribution, however big or small, is vital for our future.

As a former response driver/rider the Polo driver was clearly hesitant and held in the wrong lane, from the Polo drivers point of view, by the VW van, and their need to turn right, the video isn’t entirely clear as to who, if anyone, used indicators, the motorcycle officer included. Interactions like this happen everyday to non-police motorcyclists, drivers following their prat nav’s instructions blindly, mobile phone distractions, fail to look, fail to see even when they look or worse look see and still do it as they know they won’t get hurt unlike a rider. Unfortunately a liveried bikes ‘force field’ is prone to failure without warning, something thats killed/injured too many officers who’ve become reliant on it, something we were taught during advanced instructor training at TVP Sulhamstead was never to rely on it. This has gotten much worse post lock-down as so many drivers are out of practice or accustomed to empty roads, white van man and community nurses especially have got used to cutting corners off blindly, so much so I refused and still refuse to ride to work and have been paying increased fuel costs to drive a car to work during lockdown as an essential worker.
