A man owes Police Dog ‘Odin’ many years worth of treats after the keen K-9 managed to find his wedding ring which he had thrown away following an argument with his wife.
Handler PC Carl Woodall spotted the male and his friend acting suspiciously while on patrol in Northfield Road, Harbourne, at around 02:00 hours on Saturday morning.
PC Woodall pulled over to speak to the males to find out what they were up to.
The pair then explained to PC Woodall that they were searching for a wedding ring that had been thrown away during the heat of an argument.
Knowing how skilful PD Odin’s nose is, PC Woodall offered to lend a hand (or, in this case, a nose) as the duo stood little chance of finding the ring in the dense undergrowth in the middle of the night.
In less than two minutes, PD Oden had located the expensive ring — much to the delight of the husband who was trying to make amends with his wife.
PC Woodall said:
“Apparently the man pulled the ring off and threw it in a momentary loss of temper… but very quickly regretted his actions and was desperate to find it.
“Our dogs are trained to sniff out human scent.
“The men said they’d been looking for quite some time and the ring was quite small, so I wasn’t confident there’d be enough scent for Odin.
“But he proved me wrong and indicated by the ring in a matter of seconds. It was in grass a couple of inches long. And of course, it was pitch black.
“They could have spent all night and still not found it.
“Odin got a pat and thanks all round. It’s nice to be nice, and I was back on patrol in less than five minutes.”
PD Odin is a six-year-old German Shepherd and a product of West Midlands Polices dog breeding and training scheme.
PC Woodall has been a dog handler with WMP for almost 20 years and has been partnered with six dogs during that time, including Odin and his Springer Spaniel drugs sniffer dog Dibley.
