Over 35,000 people have joined a social media group that has been set up to protect the UK’s war memorials.
The group on Facebook, called ‘UK Cenotaph and Military Memorial Volunteers’ was founded in the wake of images and videos which were shared on social media of protesters in London desecrating war memorials.
In one such image, a male can be seen trying to set fire to a Union Jack flag on the Cenotaph in central London. He was not successful in setting fire to the flag.
Another video showing some soldiers cleaning the Earl Haig Memorial in London also went viral after ‘ACAB’ (‘All Cops Are Bastards) was sprayed onto the memorial in red paint.
Despite being goaded by protesters as they cleaned the memorial, the soldiers from the Household Cavalry, without being asked or directed to, continued to scrub the offensive letters off of the well-known landmark.
The bronze statue, of World War One officer General Earl Haig, has stood in the same spot in Whitehall since 1937.
General Haig was a commander of the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from late 1915 until the end of the war.
He had led British troops into many of the war’s most bloody battles – including the Battle of the Somme and the battle of Arras.
The founders of the ‘UK Cenotaph and Military Memorial Volunteers’ group described it (via their ‘About’ description) as:
“A private group set up to protect the most sacred of memorials in the UK dedicated to the fallen. But with careful planning, we can protect not only this [the Cenotaph] monument but other, just as important memorials wherever they may be.
“This group is not here to incite, provoke or otherwise demean social groups, ethnic groups and/or anyone with any other irrelevant factors.
“We are here to protect the memorial/s and educate the negative behaviour of those that seem to have forgotten, or never learned of the sacrifices of those before them that allows them to protest in such a manner”.

According to the Guardian, the UK Cenotaph and Military Memorial Volunteers’ group Facebook page is awash with racism and Islamophobic comments.Gives all the appearance of you cashing in on the generosity of racists and neo-Nazis, not a good look, especially given the behaviour of many who attended the protest in London last Saturday.
.I note the facebook page is gone now.

Just a bunch of right wing thugs who shout ‘veteran’ and ‘patriot’ loudly in the hope that it will disguise their faketriotism, many of them won’t have a clue what they’re protecting particularly after ten pints of stella. As a former member of the emergency services I’m quite disgusted that you think we’d all think this way?
They are attacking the memory of all that gave their lives to protect our rights. How selective they see history, Hugo boss designed the uniforms for the Nazi regime. Tate and Lyle , tetley, cotton, coffee all made a fortune on the back of slaves but that won’t stop them drinking tea coffee wearing jeans over aftershave
