Two officers from Merseyside Police have been praised after they risked their lives to save a woman from a sinking car.
Response team officers, along with the Coastguard, responded to a 999 call after members of the public, witnessed a vehicle enter the water.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said:
“We can confirm we attended at New Ferry Pier last night, Thursday, 12 September, to reports a car was driven into the water.
“Emergency services were called, along with the Coastguard, just before 7.30pm, with police officers first to attend.
“A police officer entered the water and removed a woman from the car as the car began to sink further, he was assisted by a second officer.
“The ambulance service attended and the woman, in her forties, was taken to hospital where she was assessed and detained under the Mental Health Act”.
