Officer To Undergo Surgery After Being Assaulted By A Male During A Footchase
Avon & Somerset Constabulary has confirmed that one of their officers is due to undergo surgery after receiving severe facial injuries while trying to detain a suspect.
A spokesperson for the force confirmed that at about 7 pm yesterday (August 20), a suspicious vehicle was seen by officers outside a building supplies company in Staple Hill.
The car drove off and was spotted by officers a short time later in Kensington Road.
When officers approached the vehicle, the three occupants got out and ran off in different directions.
One of the suspects was seen heading along a footpath off Acacia Road, and an officer chased after him.
While detaining the suspect, the officer has suffered some severe facial injuries.
He was taken to hospital where he will undergo surgery.
He is said to be in a stable condition.
Police have confirmed that two arrests have been made.
A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class A drug and a 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs.
A quantity of suspected class A drugs and other items including cash and mobile phones, have been recovered from the scene and the car has been seized for a full forensic examination.
A cordon remains in place for further searches to take place today.
Avon & Somerset Police have thanked people for their messages of support for the officer.
A spokesperson for the force said:
“Thank you for your kind words and well-wishes for our officer who was injured while trying to detain a suspect in Staple Hill.
“We appreciate all your support.
“He remains in hospital in a stable condition and we’re continuing to give him and his family all the support they need”.

This is awful and becoming a daily occurrence of Officers being attacked and severely injured some sadly killed.
It’s about time the justice system was changed giving perpetrators harsher and longer sentences.
I hope the Officer makes a full and speedy recovery. They do not put on a uniform to be attacked
