A male has repeatedly stabbed a female nurse at Newham University Hospital in east London.

The incident happened at 05:40 hours on Wednesday, 12 June.

The 50-year-old NHS employee was stabbed with a pair of scissors by a 27-year-old male.

A statement released by the Metropolitan Police confirmed:

‘Police were called at 05:39hrs on Wednesday, 12 June to reports of a stabbing at the Hospital.

‘The victim, aged 50, suffered multiple stab wounds caused by a pair of scissors. Her injuries have been assessed as non-life threatening.

‘The male suspect aged 27 was arrested on suspicion of GBH at the scene. Police were on scene within three minutes. He remains in an east London Police Station where he continues to be questioned.

Enquiries continue. There are no other reported injuries.

‘Anyone with information concerning this incident is requested to call police via 101 quoting CAD 1063/12 June. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111’.

Shane Degaris, deputy group chief executive of Barts Health NHS Trust, told the BBC that it was a “shocking and senseless attack on a member of staff doing their duty”.

He said: “A member of nursing staff in the emergency department at Newham Hospital was stabbed by a member of the public while at work early this morning.

“The victim was treated in the emergency department, admitted to a ward and has since been discharged home.”

He added the trust was “reviewing security at all our hospitals to ensure the safety of all our staff and patients at all times”.

It could happen many times over. Staff are left with patients who book in and have no idea of their past history or their thoughts at that moment. They could have previous mental health problem or drug problems sometimes they don’t get what they want and get angry. Many situations arise. It is an unpredictable event .

Minimum of 20 years and no parole for anyone attacking an NHS worker police fire public sector workers who are just doing their jobs. And a public floggin in the local market place shown on prime time tv. A strong message needs to be sent to these animals who abuse people trying to help them.
