The Metropolitan Police has launched an investigation after a male prisoner was found dead inside HMP Belmarsh.
Prison Staff called police at 20:00hrs on Tuesday 18th February to reports of an assault that took place inside the high-security prison.
Officers, along with medics from the London Ambulance Service attended the prison where a 36-year-old man was found with severe head injuries.
The male was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. He died yesterday evening (19th February) as a result of his injuries.
Two men, both aged 28, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. They have both been remanded back into custody to allow officers further time to investigate the incident.
DCI Leonard, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Division, said:
“We are working to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident with the support of SERCO and local officers.
“At this stage I am open-minded concerning motive, but expect this to become clear as the investigation progresses.”
