The Metropolitan Police has reported a worrying increase in the number of instances of motorists caught ‘extreme speeding’ on the streets of the capital during the national lockdown.
The Met’s Lead on Investigation for Fatal & Serious road collisions, Supt Andy Cox, has asked people to view these speeding motorists the same way as they would drink drivers.
In a video shared on Twitter, Superintendant Cox said:
“The vast majority of people watching this video today will challenge a drink driver; they will not get in a car with somebody who is going to drink-drive.
“They will try to take the keys off of somebody who is going to drink-drive. They will do everything they can to try and prevent that drink driver from taking to the road.
“We need to do the same for speeding.
“How many people watching this broadcast might do that for drink drivers but haven’t done it for speeders?
“I’m asking everybody to challenge someone if they are going to speed”.
Supt Cox asked people to challenge the behaviour of their driver if they find themselves in a vehicle that is being driven at excess speed.
Police forces around the country have found that some motorists are taking advantage of the lack of vehicles on the road by driving at ‘ridiculous’ speeds.
Supt Andy Cox added:
“With less congestion on London roads, we see examples of extreme speeding.
“This increases the risk of serious collisions.
“Drink Driving is socially unacceptable. We should treat speeding this way too”.
Supt Andy Cox has recorded a 30-minute video on YouTube where he talks about what the Met has witnessed in the capital. In the video, Supt Cox also answers questions which were put to him via Twitter.

Not just London, distracted by company tech/mobile phone use delivery drivers are a national problem, that they expect the roads to be empty doesn’t help, add in distracted pedestrians and the usual lunatic cyclists and it’s a recipe for disaster.
Effective enforcement is called for, not just revenue gathering s’camera vans.
