A Metropolitan police officer has denied killing a teenager and seriously injuring his friend during a moped pursuit.
Lewis Johnson, 18, died following a crash after being pursued by police in Clapton, east London, on 9th February 2016.
Mr Johnson, died after hitting a van at Clapton Common while his passenger Louis Kyriacou, 19, was also severely injured.
The Crown Prosecution Service had initially decided not to charge serving police officer Paul Summerson, 43, with offences arising from the incident.
However, Lewis’ mother Ann, 49, sought a judicial review against the decision not to charge the officer.
High Court judges interceded and nullified the judgment of a reviewing lawyer not to prosecute the police officer.
The matter was then sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a review decision to be made by a different lawyer.
PC Summerson was driving a police BMW 530 on 9th February along Stoke Newington High Street, Stamford Hill and Clapton Common, when he indicated for the moped to stop.
Ben Southam, prosecuting, earlier said:
‘The defendant is a serving police officer.
‘He was involved in a pursuit in February 2016 that led to the death of the rider of a moped, Lewis Johnson and serious injuries to the passenger Louis Kyriacou.’
Summerson, of Colchester, Essex, denies causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He was granted unconditional bail ahead of a further hearing at the Old Bailey on 21 December.

Without knowing full details of the accident. On the face of it sounds like another officer trying to deal with bad guys and idiots being thrown to the lions. The law in this land is completely up the creak. Wishing the officer good luck.
Did the police officer ram the moped into the van it hit?
No?
Then it’s the scrotes own fault.
Typical scrote mother not taking responsibility for her son’s actions.
No, I am not nor have I ever been a serving police officer. I am a member of the public who support the police
It’s about time mother’s took responsibility for their little shits that gonarou d robbing, stealing mopeds or fleeing the police.
The kid caused his own death by deciding to flee the police
If you flee from the police ,if the officer has reason to stop and question, what should the policeman do but suspect a law has been broken and investigate.
What a ridiculous decision. It’s typical that no responsibility is apportioned to the rider who decided to fail to stop. I hope this officer is found not guilty. The judicial system in this country is not fit for purpose.
I agree with all of the comments above. In short, the rider of the moped defied the instruction to stop, which is not good to start with and then tried to out run a Class 1 Police driver on a moped, which is plain stupid.
The copper did not tell him to run; he took that decision all on his own. That it was an extremely bad decision is not anybody else’s problem but his own. This blame culture must stop. How dare this woman try to blame an officer doing his duty.
Once more the blame culture is victimizing someone doing their job attempting to keep our roads safe for our benefit. More to the point, who is funding this woman? Us. Why? Apart from being his mother, she has nothing to do with the case. It has been investigated and the officer absolved of all blame. That should be the end of it.
You can bet your pension that had the officer been killed by this guy, we would hear little more about it. Our civilisation is crumbling around us and in 50 years, anarchy will reign. Fortunately, I will be dead by then but I pity the grandkids.
How many stolen mobiles were they carrying, was the scooter LOS? Stick up for your Officers & tell the mother to do one
