So I’ve woken up to this wonderfully charming, morale inducing headline this morning…
Let’s address some of the facts here:
The foundations for the modern ambulance service were laid in 1884 where the first horse drawn dedicated ambulances were stationed at a Liverpool hospital. These were staffed by an Ambulance orderly. Vehicles have obviously advanced but medical care didn’t change much until 1966 where the foundations for the modern paramedic were laid. In 1969 the first paramedics were being trained, and care has vastly improved ever since.
A paramedic trained in the UK in 1980, had less training than a technician trained in 2016, and these men and women are still practicing as paramedics.
Granted they have undergone updated training and some have progressed to degree level, but there still are many paramedics with no diploma or IHCD qualifications.
Does that make them inferior? No!!!
They have many years of experience. The ‘Old skool’ paramedics had 10-14 weeks intensive training (depending on the trust), the same as a technician.
We’re qualified to the same standard as a first year paramedic, we just haven’t done the advanced procedures such as the controlled drugs, IO, intubation (which some trusts don’t even allow paramedics to do anymore).
So my question to you Sophie Borland, Rosie Taylor and Ross Parker, is this;
do you need a paramedic to treat your self entitled millennial minor illness, or can a technician tell you to man up and take responsibility for your own care?
* Daily Mail we’d love a response.
*a genuine emergency will always be treated as such by any grade of staff from ECA to HEMS Doctor.

Dear Sophie Borland, Rosie Taylor and Ross Parker,
Have you ever considered stepping out in to the real world and doing something productive? Perhaps you could step in to the shoes of any one of these REAL heroes and risk your life to save that of a complete stranger whilst being subjected to taunts and abuse from feral, knuckle dragging neanderthals.
All of our emergency services ( whatever colour their uniform ) give their all EVERY SINGLE TIME they turn out to respond to a plea for help. If you cannot find it within the cavernous black hole you call a heart to support them then at least do the decent thing and keep your worthless thoughts to yourself.
Well said 🙂
Why don’t these so called ‘expert journalists’ come out and deal with reality!!!!!!!!! Spend even 24 hours on the ‘road’ with these wonderful wonderful crews!!!!!
Spent 14 weeks to complete AAP (Associate Ambulance Practioner COURSE, away from family, living expenses – to read this, so easy to paint bad publicity about the very people whom are first to step in to save lives, how about asking the Emergency service what kind of trauma they take back home after a long wet shift ? what they must of seen whilst you where tucked up in your warm bed- it disgusts me to read this that the very people who degrade the service are the first to call , instead of stepping forward to help -with no or little knowledge about the service that comes to your aid. How the jobs are prioritised , and why ECA OR TECH come out to you – It’s tuff out there dealing with patients as it is without you fuelling the public with more Hate – BUT THEN YOU ARE Daily Mail what else can we expect from w Narrow minded paper 😡‼️
Come & spend a shift with a non-paramedic crew then another with a paramedic crew & see if you can tell the difference. I can guarantee you will see the same level of dedication, commitment and care with both. The same as you would when you see a nurse practitioner at you GP surgery instead of a doctor.
Also, what you fail to realise is that most technicians are paramedics in training, gaining valuable experience while working towards a paramedic qualification. The ambulance service is under enough pressure as it is, without you adding to it with your lies and misinformation.
Newspapers exist to sell papers and make a profit. Any ‘news’ is entirely incidental.
Or made up, or the writer’s opinion as it appears to be in this case. To be expected from the Daily Mail though.
Interesting fact No1 – Back in the late 1990’s, whilst working for the LAS, the then owner of this paper experienced a cardiac arrest in the back of my ambulance… One rigorous roadside resus later and I delivered him, GCS 15, to the A&E staff at the Chelsea & Westminster… I was a Technician at the time…🤣
thanks for this 😉 will will share this on the main page (without your name)
stop buying their paper, until they live in the real world, they don’t know what they are on about. well done ALL crew .
