Avon crews from Temple, Southmead, Bedminster, Kingswood, Avonmouth, Hicks Gate, Portishead and Patchway fire stations were called to a fire on a ground floor commercial property which was affecting residential flats above the premises.
The call came in just after 1 am this morning (11th July).
On arrival, 24 firefighters in breathing apparatus used four high-pressure hose reels and two 45mm jets to extinguish the fire.
They also used six positive pressure ventilation fans to clear smoke from the property.
Firefighters rescued five people from the building and 16 were evacuated.
Three casualties were suffering from smoke inhalation.
Police, ambulance and Bristol City Council were in attendance, and the road was closed.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
