Shortly after 7.30am this morning (Thursday 18 October 2018), officers with Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a disturbance at a flat on Sandyhill Road.

Within ten minutes, officers attended the scene and spoke with several residents before a man fled in a black Citroën Berlingo van towards Blackley New Road.

Police Officers attempted to try and speak to the driver of the van before it collided with one of the officers responding to the incident, three police vehicles and five cars belonging to members of the public on Blackley New Road.

The van then made off towards Newton Heath where it has since been located and is being forensically examined by specialist scenes of crime officers.

The 43-year-old police officer was taken to hospital for treatment for leg injuries and he is now recovering at home.

Two men aged 23 and two girls aged 16 and 17 have been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and theft of a motor vehicle. They all (as of 18th Oct/18) remain in police custody for questioning.

Superintendent Chris Hill, of GMP’s City of Manchester division, said:

“Thanks to the quick work of officers from across the force, we’ve been able to make four arrests and I would like to thank them along with the public for their support throughout the morning.

“Whilst the injured officer came straight back into work from hospital on his new crutches, he’s been sent home to recover with his family and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

“Our investigation remains ongoing and I would continue to urge anyone with any information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch.”

Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said:

“This is a shocking incident from the early hours of this morning which left one of my officers in hospital.

“Officers put their lives on the line to protect people and property and the consequences of this incident could have been much more serious.

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 3610 or 101 quoting incident number 395 of 18/10/2018, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Before you go...

WE NEED YOUR HELP.Here at Emergency Services News, we aim to tell you stories that the mainstream media are not interested in reporting. Whilst the MSM love to berate and ridicule the emergency services, who is there to report on the realities of serving on the front line?

Emergency Services News is currently a loss-making entity. But our team of volunteers, all former emergency services personnel, do not do it for the money.

We do it because we are sick and tired of the mainstream media constantly trying to undermine the men and women who put their lives on the line to keep you and your family safe.

How many MSM journalists who speak ill of the emergency services have actually dared to don the uniform and risk their own lives to save the life of a complete stranger? If you would like to help back our mission of reporting on fact-based news, then please consider helping to support us financially.

You can support emergency services news from as little as £1. It only takes a minute. Every contribution, however big or small, is vital for our future.

Please help us to continue to highlight the life-saving work of the emergency services, NHS and armed forces by becoming a supporter.
