West Midlands Police have confirmed that a 15-year-old girl has been arrested after a distressing video (see below) showing a schoolgirl being attacked on a bus in Birmingham was shared online.
The video was posted on social media on Monday night (27th January) and has been viewed over 600,000 times.
But West Midlands Police believe that the attack on the girl occurred on 22nd December.
The video has caused outrage amongst social media users who have shared their disgust over the attack on the victim by a group of young girls.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said:
“We arrested a 15-year-old girl from Kingstanding on suspicion of assault this morning (Wednesday), and she remains in custody this afternoon.
“Plans are in place to speak to another girl later this afternoon.
“The victim has been spoken to and is being supported, and the investigation continues”.
Inspector Lauren Glass from CID said:
“The response from members of the public, clearly disgusted by what they’ve seen online, has been overwhelming, and we’ve had lots of people getting in touch to provide names of people involved.
“We have identified two suspects.
“One has been arrested, and plans are in place for the other to attend a police station for questioning later today.
“I’d like to reassure everyone this is being treated very seriously and that the enquiry is progressing.
“Under no circumstances should anyone take matters into their own hands as this could leave them liable to prosecution themselves.”
