The National Police Air Service (Exeter) has been praised for helping to save the life of a suicidal woman who ended up in a freezing river in the middle of the night.
The NPAS helicopter was tasked on service at 02:15 hours to join the search for the woman who had gone missing in Lapford, Devon, early Sunday morning.
The crew used the onboard high-intensity ‘night sun’ searchlight in order to illuminate the River Yeo after locating the stricken female.
An officer on the ground then risked his own life to jump into the river in order to save the female.
Tweeting about the incident, @NPASExeter said:
‘Fantastic work by an officer on the ground who not only found her, but then jumped into the river to save her.
‘The nightsun was used to illuminate the water rescue’.
The National Police Air Service is a police aviation service that provides centralised air support to the 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales.
It replaced the previous structure whereby police forces operated their own helicopters, either individually or in small consortia.
Each year, the National Police Air Service attend thousands of calls and provide invaluable intelligence and support to officers on the ground.
