Thugs Jailed Over Vile Attack On Man With Walking Stick
Two yobs who launched a shocking bus stop attack on a defenceless man with a walking stick have been jailed after West Midlands Police identified them following a public appeal.
Detectives released CCTV footage to trace the thugs after they bundled their 56-year-old victim to the floor and hit him with an iron bar in Birmingham.
The man was kicked while he was on the ground as the unscrupulous pair rummaged through his pockets.
The victim was left with a gashed head by the would-be robbers who fled the scene in Bordesley Green empty-handed after a member of the public intervened on 28 July.
Initial enquiries failed to identify the pair and a police appeal with CCTV sourced by officers was released on 16 August.
The footage, which was recovered following a trawl of the area, showed the assault and the pair getting out of a VW Polo in a nearby street.
The violent attack prompted outrage and disgust on social media and inspired dozens of calls to investigators with information on those believed to be involved.
Emergency Services News shared the video clip back in August, and over 500,000 people viewed the video, and it had nearly 10,000 shares.
The information received from the public was promptly corroborated by an officer who recognised Kyle Causer after dealing with him at a custody block just days earlier.
The PC had stopped Causer in a VW Polo which was being driven on false plates.
There was a machete and metal bar recovered from the vehicle, and he had been detained and later jailed for possession of an offensive weapon and drug offences.
Further investigations around the vehicle were able to confirm the true registration and that it belonged to Tayub Zaman.
From there, detectives were able to establish that Zaman had pulled the victim to the floor and held him down as Causer kicked and hit him with the bar.
They then escaped on foot, and the vehicle was collected by someone later that day.
Causer, aged 25, of no fixed address, admitted assault with intent to rob and possession of an offensive weapon and was sentenced to four years and four months at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday (22 October).
Zaman, also aged 25, of Cherrywood Road, Bordesley Green, pleaded guilty to the same offences and was jailed for four years and six months.
DC Craig Tennant, from force CID, said:
“This was a very nasty attack on a man who was clearly vulnerable.
“He was waiting for a bus and would have been completely oblivious to the appalling assault to come.
“His injuries could have been much worse had it not been for the intervention of the passer-by.
“The public were rightly sickened by the attack and their information played a crucial role in ensuring we got the men responsible.
“Causer and Zaman gained nothing… but lost their freedom.”
