Met Police TSG Officer Charged With Common Assault

A serving officer based with the Metropolitan Polices’ Territorial Support Group has been charged with common assault.

The PC, who is attached the Met’s Territorial Support Group at Chadwell Heath, was charged by postal charge requisition on Monday, 12 August.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 29 August.

The charges relate to an alleged assault at a demonstration at the

Haymarket, Central London on Saturday, 16 February 2019.

The officer is currently on restricted duties.

The charges follow an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

A spokesperson for the IOPC said:

‘A Metropolitan Police Service officer will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday 29 August 2019 charged with common assault.

‘PC Connor Pennery, 27, has been charged following an IOPC independent investigation into an allegation an officer may have used excessive force when detaining a man on Jermyn Street.

‘The detention took place at approximately 3.20pm on Saturday 16 February 2019 when PC Pennery was on duty for a ‘yellow vest’ protest taking place that day’.

Six protesters were arrested, and two police officers were assaulted during the protests, as officers attempted to control angry right-wing demonstrators who were marching through Whitehall and Piccadilly.

In a statement at the time, talking about the protests, a spokesperson for the Met said:

“Six arrests were made following a moving ‘yellow vest’ protest in Whitehall and Piccadilly on Saturday, 16 February.

“Two officers were assaulted during the course of policing the protest which concluded shortly after 16:10hrs.

“Both officers were taken to hospital for treatment of their ABH and common assault injuries.

“Neither had to remain in hospital following treatment received.

“Four people were arrested on suspicion of public order-related matters with a further two arrested on suspicion of assault on police.”
